Esther Juon was born and raised in Switzerland. She trained in classical ballet with Armin Wild at the Opera House Ballet in Zurich. In 1972, she moved to London to carry on studying ballet at Rambert School & Dance Centre. During her training, she sustained a severe back injury which stopped her career as a dancer and returned to Switzerland. In 1974, she returned to England and studied the Benesh Movement Notation at the Benesh Institute. In 1976, Esther underwent a spinal fusion operation and recovered fully to teach ballet in 1980. Esther moved to Brighton where she opened Dance Laines and opened a ballet shop. Not wanting to have dancers injured, she took a great interest in dancers’ feet and how to stop them from being damaged. She became a member of British Ballet Organization as a ballet teacher and delivered ballet exams once or twice a year. Esther also focused on researching about pointe shoes and feet. By 1990, she met Dr Lucy Redhead, a physiotherapist and Helen Morrell a podiatrist and started to develop a pointe shoe fitting system as well as a physical pointe assessment. In 1995, Esther attained her teaching qualification with BBO ABBO, and self-published a small book called “Pointe Shoe Secrets.” She was then invited to fit pointe shoes at the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet Company and was awarded the Diaghilev Diploma for her work with feet and pointe shoes. After visit to Moscow, Esther got invited to write for “Young Dancer Magazine” and has presented lectures and workshops about feet and pointe shoes and eventually, dancers came from far and wide for feet and pointe shoe advise and fittings. She became a member of IADMS in 1999 where Lucy Redhead presented her work on “how to support the foot on pointe” In 2004, Esther attained her 2nd teaching qualification from BBO EQF In 2005, Esther together with her husband, moved from Brighton UK to New Zealand where she settled in the centre of the North Island, in Waipawa Central Hawkes’ Bay. She opened Waipawa Dance Centre in 2008 and taught classical ballet to children and adults and preparing young dancers for entry into full time training. In 2010, she opened Grishko NZ Ltd, together with Jackie Scannell becoming importers of Grishko Pointe shoes into New Zealand so that Esther could carry on her work with feet and pointe shoes. By 2012, she launched Juon Pointe, running workshops, assessments, fittings, and follow ups. Juon Pointe aims to: Look after and monitor the dancer Train interested pointe shoe fitters in the art of assessing dancers, their feet and fitting them with the correct pointe shoes. The same year, Esther joined the prestigious “Dancer Wellness Project” by Professor Gary Galbraith and Assistant Professor Karen Potter at Ohio University. In October 2014, Esther presented a workshop at IADMS about taping of the feet instead of using an ouch pouch. She also joined the IADMS Education Committee By 2018, Esther built a dedicated centre for feet and pointe shoes. From here Esther now works only with private clients delivering Pre-Pointe Assessments, Screening and Mentoring Programs. Due to COVID Esther’s work went on zoom and now she presents her work all over the world and works with teachers in Australia, Canada, USA, Ireland UK, Denmark, New Caledonia, and India. Erin's Bio Erin Bowerman MSpEx, BDance Erin is a qualified strength and conditioning coach with a background in dance, having trained in RAD ballet up to Advanced 2 level. She holds a Bachelor of Dance (Top Scholar, 2010) and a Master of Sport & Exercise from AUT University where she carried out her research at the Australian Ballet School in conjunction with High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) looking at the risk factors for overuse injuries in elite adolescent ballet dancers. Erin is an accredited strength and conditioning coach with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association. From 2016-2018 Erin was based in London where she worked as a strength and conditioning coach at the Royal Ballet School White Lodge and the National Centre for Circus Arts. In both roles Erin had the privilege of being at the forefront of developing and implementing the strength and conditioning services. Before moving to the UK Erin trained with and worked for Dance Pilates in Auckland (2009-2016) during which time she was heavily involved in the development of a number of their conditioning programs that are currently used and endorsed by the New Zealand School of Dance. Erin is also a qualified personal trainer and a published author in peer reviewed journals. Erin has worked with many young dancers that have gone onto train at and dance with some of the leading vocational dance schools & companies both in Aotearoa and internationally, including; the New Zealand School of Dance & the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the Australian Ballet School & the Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet Academy, Queensland National Ballet School, Royal Ballet School & Royal Ballet Company, English National Ballet School & the English National Ballet, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, Dutch National Ballet, John Cranko Schule, Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin, European School of Ballet, Alberta Ballet School and many others. Since returning to New Zealand in 2018 Erin has been working across multiple facets of the dance industry including providing healthcare support & supplementary training to several of New Zealand’s leading contemporary dance companies, in particular the New Zealand Dance Company and also the newly established New Zealand Youth Ballet Company. Erin was credited with providing the NZDC with an injury-free international tour of Canada in 2019. She also trains a large portion of the freelance contemporary dance professionals in both Auckland and around New Zealand and has links with Axis Sports Medicine in Auckland and Queenstown and Pinnacle Sports Physicians in Christchurch. She is experienced in both rehabilitation and pre-habilitation and is incredibly passionate about working together with both artistic staff and health professionals to provide support for and to improve dancers’ health, wellbeing and performance. Georgina Barr BA, Dip Journ, BHSc Podiatry Georgina Barr started her podiatry career in response to the Christchurch earthquakes after working in the arts sector. Georgina works part time at Merivale Podiatry in Christchurch. She is an Associate Member of the New Zealand Rheumatology Association and has presented arthritis-focused original research at international podiatry conferences and has presented to local Arthritis New Zealand discussion groups. She also runs her own business, Barrina Ltd, where she provides Pre Pointe Assessments, a custom pointe shoe fitting service, and All Styles Dance Biomechanical Mentoring. She also lectures on anatomy and biomechanical physiology and presents original dance medicine research at local, national and international dance and medical conferences. Georgina is an affiliated committee member of the Christchurch Ballet Society, a Friend of the Royal Academy of Dance, a member of both IADMS and ASPAH, and she has training in the Juon Pointe Shoe Fitting System. She is the first person ever to receive the Juon Pointe Gold Standard award. Co-host Chloe Faulkner-Ball is about to become a 1st year student in Te Auaha’s Musical Theatre programme. Skilled across the performing arts she has a strong background in dance having trained in ballet, jazz, contemporary and dance conditioning during her high school years. Chloe has completed assistant teacher training and is currently working as a junior dance teacher alongside her studies. Chloe is also an experienced photographer. She has a passion for helping others through dance and a strong interest in dance education and science. Seidah Tuaoi is a proud New Zealand born Samoan and Cook Island female. She studied at the University of Auckland and graduated with a Bachelor of Dance. During her studies, she joined the street dance community in Auckland. This saw her joining Hopskotch dance company which led her to other crews such as Projekt Team, Lighthouse Fam and Watchmins Krump fam. It was in these dance collectives she learnt about family, community and culture. Seidah became interested in teaching dance at a secondary schools level. After graduating with a teachers diploma, she taught dance at the following high schools Aorere, Waitakere, Mcauley and is currently teaching at Karamu High in the Hawkes Bay. Whilst imparting into the next generation, Seidah was able to create art and perform at an international level. This involved becoming a member of Jaja Vankova’s RuR alliance collective, performing at the World Hip Hop Championships in Last Vegas, joining the first group to win the Minicrew section in New Zealand, and creating fusion dance on film called Fa’atino and Flaws. These dance films explored hybridising Popping styled movements with traditional Samoan siva. These films were recognised nationally at dance events and film festivals. Flaws was also recognised by international dance artist Poppin Pete, who created the dance style Popping.
Learn More About Sophie RyanSophie is a graduate of the New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) and an ex-professional dancer. Now a dance physiotherapist in Wellington, Sophie has dedicated her career to working in dance performance, dance health and dance education. As well as completing her physiotherapy degree, Sophie undertook an apprenticeship and then worked with Dance Pilates (creators of Movitae) in Auckland for four years, and completed her Progressing Ballet Technique certification in Melbourne, Australia. Sophie is continually undertaking ongoing professional development courses in the dance-specific field. For over a decade, Sophie has taught in private dance schools in Auckland and Wellington, including classical ballet technique, pointe and dance conditioning, with a strong focus on safe dance practice. Sophie was a part of the Health Team at NZSD for five years, during which she held the position of Dance Conditioning tutor, delivered inservices and workshops to staff and students, conducted NZQA level assessments and provided individualized clinical rehabilitation of complex injuries. As a dance physiotherapist, Sophie works with all dancers, from recreational and pre-professional dance students through to dance teachers, and has treated professional dancers who have performed with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Ballet Collective Aotearoa, Opera Australia, Footnote, Java Dance and the New Zealand Dance Company, as well as freelance artists.
